Cofely Datacenter Solutions goes sustainable
Maastricht. Customer base totals more than 250,000 m² state-of the art data centres
Cofely, a GDF SUEZ company, has strengthened its leading market position in the Netherlands in creating and operating high-quality data centres by launching its “Cofely Datacenter Solutions”. Bringing together at Maastricht all its know-how at its own state-of-the-art data centre with TIER III classification, Cofely will use know-how gained at this centre to deliver to its customers the latest and most energy-efficient solutions.
State-of-the-art data centre solutions
Cofely Datacenter Solutions is built on the pillars of certainty, scalability, cost control and green energy. Edo van den Assem, CEO of Cofely Netherlands, said: ‘The basis of “Cofely Datacenter Solutions” is not just our knowledge of sustainable technology, but also our wide experience of industrial quality standards and process control. With our own data centre we are giving substance to the old adage of practice what you preach. Through our experience in operating a data centre we know what it means to fulfil customer guarantees for availability and energy consumption. We will take this knowledge on board when building and managing other data centres'. In the company's Maastricht data centre some large customers have already set up shop. They include Algemene Pensioen Groep, Maastricht University Hospital, KPN and VEBEGO Groep, which have housed here a significant part their complete IT platforms. Flexibility, security and guaranteed availability of the data centre are not the only important reasons for these organisations to place their hardware at Cofely. Importantly, they also look for energy efficiency.
Solving the energy issue is an increasingly important success factor for modern data centres. Sticking points tend to be energy supplies and cooling. While servers consume a lot of energy, they also generate hot air that must be discharged. Many of the modern data centres, like Cofely is creating across in Europe, are - just like 'Maastricht' - extremely energy-efficient and wherever possible use only green energy to ease the burden on the environment. Cofely is also working on controlling temperature by means of 'free cooling'. This involves using outdoor air to cool the data centre whenever the outdoor temperature allows. The next step in sustaining data centres will be to create synergy with the surroundings. By means of ‘Cofely Datacenter Solutions‘, Cofely will use the knowledge and experience gained in major projects like Overhoeks, Oosterdokseiland and Windnet Oost Flevoland for the ongoing sustaining of its data centres. This might include heat/cold storage and private grids with wind energy.
Continuity and security
In addition to sustainability other crucial requirements are availability, safety and flexibility. ‘Cofely Datacenter Solutions’ again uses in these fields the experience gained with its own data centre in Maastricht. The power station has been placed outside the data centre, thus separating the central infrastructure from the computer rooms. This creates the flexibility to grow. Thanks to the availability of several dark-fibre lines it is possible to create ultra-high-speed network connections. Several providers also offer the possibility for redundancy. To guarantee the uptime of data centres the Cofely data centres are managed proactively according to factors like temperature, air humidity, security and energy consumption.
International track record
Cofely has a lengthy track record in designing, building and managing data centres. In the Netherlands, Cofely is contributing to approximately 50,000 m2 of data centre space in the Netherlands. Internationally, Cofely is building and managing more than 250,000 m2 of data facilities Europe wide for major national and international companies like Interxion, TCN, Atos Origin, Level 3, Colt Telecom, ABN AMRO, Colony Capital and IBM.
